Terms of Service

1. Experimental Platform

OpenTau is an experimental API gateway that routes requests to decentralized AI infrastructure powered by the Bittensor network. The platform, its services, APIs, and all associated software are provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

2. User Responsibility

By using OpenTau, you acknowledge and agree that:

  • You are solely responsible for your use of the platform, including any content you submit, generate, or retrieve through the API.
  • You will comply with all applicable laws and regulations in your jurisdiction when using the service.
  • You will not use the platform for any unlawful, harmful, abusive, or otherwise objectionable purposes.
  • You are responsible for evaluating the suitability and accuracy of any AI-generated output for your intended use case.

3. Service Modifications

OpenTau reserves the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the service at any time, with or without notice. This includes changes to API endpoints, available models, pricing, rate limits, and features. We are not liable to you or any third party for any modification, suspension, or discontinuation of the service.

4. Rate Limits & Fair Usage

All API usage is subject to rate limits and fair usage policies. Free tier users are limited to 500 requests per day with access to smaller models only. Paid tier users receive higher limits proportional to their credit balance. We reserve the right to throttle or temporarily suspend access to any user who engages in abusive or excessive usage patterns that degrade the service for others.

5. API Keys

API keys issued by OpenTau are personal and non-transferable. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your API keys. You must not share, sell, lease, or otherwise transfer your API keys to any third party. Any activity conducted using your API key is your responsibility. If you suspect unauthorized use, revoke your key immediately via the dashboard.

6. Account Termination

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account and revoke API access at any time, for any reason, including but not limited to violation of these terms, abusive behavior, or suspected fraudulent activity.

Disclaimer

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, OpenTau and its operators, contributors, and affiliates shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of profits, data, revenue, business opportunities, or goodwill, arising out of or in connection with your use of or inability to use the service, regardless of the cause of action or theory of liability.

No Production Guarantee

OpenTau is an experimental platform built on decentralized infrastructure. It is not designed, tested, or warranted for production-critical applications. There are no guarantees of uptime, accuracy, latency, or availability. The platform may experience downtime, degraded performance, or complete outages without notice.

Decentralized Infrastructure

OpenTau routes inference requests to third-party providers operating on the Bittensor network. No single entity controls the network or the miners that serve inference. We do not control, endorse, or guarantee the behavior, reliability, or output quality of any individual miner or provider. Responses may vary between requests even for identical inputs.

AI Output Disclaimer

AI outputs may be inaccurate, biased, misleading, or harmful. Users are solely responsible for how they interpret, use, and act upon AI-generated content. OpenTau does not verify, endorse, or guarantee the correctness of any model output. Do not rely on AI outputs for medical, legal, financial, or safety-critical decisions without independent professional verification.

Third-Party Providers

Bittensor miners and subnet validators are independent third-party operators. OpenTau acts solely as a gateway and does not control their inference infrastructure, models, or outputs. We make no representations or warranties regarding the quality, accuracy, safety, or appropriateness of any content generated by third-party providers.

Credits & Deposits

All credits and deposits are non-refundable. USDC deposits on the Base chain and all smart contract interactions carry inherent risk. Once deposited, credits are consumed by API usage at the applicable rate. We are not liable for any losses arising from depositing funds, smart contract bugs, blockchain network issues, or any other circumstance.

No Liability for Losses

We are not liable for any losses arising from:

  • Using the service or relying on AI-generated outputs
  • Depositing funds or purchasing credits
  • Smart contract interactions (OpenTauVault, DRAIN payment channels)
  • Service interruptions, downtime, or data loss
  • Actions taken by third-party miners or providers
  • Changes to the service, pricing, or available models
  • Unauthorized access to your account or API keys

Risk Disclosure

Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Risks

OpenTau operates across multiple blockchain networks and digital assets, including but not limited to USDC (on Base and Polygon), TAO (Bittensor native token), and interactions with the Base and Polygon chains. All cryptocurrency and blockchain interactions carry inherent risks:

  • Digital asset values are highly volatile and may fluctuate significantly
  • Blockchain transactions are irreversible once confirmed
  • Network congestion may delay or increase the cost of transactions
  • Bridge operations between chains involve additional smart contract risk
  • Wallet security is your sole responsibility

Smart Contract Risks

OpenTau utilizes smart contracts including the OpenTauVault on Base and DRAIN payment channels on Polygon. Smart contracts are software programs that:

  • May contain undiscovered bugs, vulnerabilities, or exploits
  • Are immutable once deployed and cannot be modified to fix issues
  • May interact with other contracts in unexpected ways
  • May be affected by changes to the underlying blockchain protocol
  • May result in partial or total loss of deposited funds

$TAU Token Disclaimer

$TAU is an experimental token with no guaranteed value. It is not a security, not an investment, and should not be treated as investment advice. $TAU could lose all of its value at any time. Do not purchase or hold $TAU with the expectation of profit. Past performance is not indicative of future results. You should only interact with $TAU if you fully understand and accept the risk of total loss.

Regulatory Uncertainty

The regulatory landscape for decentralized AI, cryptocurrency, and blockchain technology is evolving and uncertain. Laws and regulations may change in ways that adversely affect the platform, its tokens, or your ability to use the service. It is your responsibility to comply with all applicable laws in your jurisdiction. OpenTau makes no representations regarding the legality of its services in any particular jurisdiction.

No Guaranteed Returns

Nothing on this platform constitutes financial advice. There are no guaranteed returns of any kind. Any projections, estimates, or forward-looking statements are speculative and should not be relied upon. You should conduct your own research and consult with qualified professionals before making any financial decisions.

Privacy

Prompt Processing

When you make an API request, your prompts are forwarded to Bittensor miners for processing. These miners are independent third-party operators. While the decentralized architecture provides some privacy advantages, there is no guarantee of complete privacy for the content of your prompts or API requests.

Data Retention

OpenTau does not store the content of your prompts or AI responses beyond what is necessary for usage tracking and billing. We record metadata such as model used, token counts, timestamps, and cost per request. We do not log the content of conversations or generated outputs.

Miner Processing

Bittensor miners that process your requests may operate under their own data handling practices. We have no control over how miners handle, store, or process the data they receive. Despite the decentralized nature of the network, you should not assume complete privacy when using the service.

API Key Security

API keys are stored as SHA-256 hashes, not in plaintext. We never store or have access to your raw API key after initial generation. Only the key prefix (for identification) and the cryptographic hash (for authentication) are retained.

Account Information

We store your email address, wallet addresses (if provided), credit balance, and usage history. This information is used solely for account management, billing, and service operation. We do not sell or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.

Blockchain Transparency

Deposit transactions on Base, DRAIN channel operations on Polygon, and any other on-chain interactions are publicly visible on their respective blockchain explorers. Blockchain transactions are permanent and cannot be deleted or hidden.
